Pages Not Working at wordPress 2.5

wordpress 2.5

My other site was upgraded on the next day the WordPress 2.5 had released and everything works fine as well as all the plugins I’m using on that site except for the Image/Media Uploader which is everybody’s problem, I guess. Solution here.

But only last night I got a chance to upgrade Pinoy Console from WordPress v2.3.3 to version 2.5. I know I was a late comer, but not for the reason I’m playing safe. I admit, I read a lot of stuff about the new version first before I set to upgrade. But I know not every problem are all the same and not all the solution is the same. In short, each blog is unique. My reason is on this post. So instead of using the Automatic I rather choose the Three Steps Upgrade approach. Ok, so I upgrade my site smoothly and activated all my plugin one by one with no problem except only for Popularity contest plugin by Alex King wherein the solution is found by KenMc, the only thing it’s a bit technical for a noobz like me so I rather wait for Alex King to upgrade it.

For short, after upgrading WP 2.5, everything is seems work all fine until I open my contact page and everything start to looks shady. All my pages is not working, it give me a 404 error. I got a permalink problem, so I check all my post, categories and even my archives, but they are all working fine. It’s only my pages got a 404 error. So I go to worpress.org forum and found out that a lot of people also having the same problem as mine. After sneaking around the forum I got a solution posted by dlo but I found also an alternative solution which is more easy.

Problem description:

It seems that PATHINFO permalink structure beginning with /index.php/%category% or /index.php/%postname% or /index.php/%tag% or /index.php/%author% is broken for pages in WP 2.5 when it was valid in WP 2.3.3. or the WP 2.5 not supported the PATHINFO permalink structure.

dlo solution here: trac.wordpress.org

PinoyConsole solution:

1. Download and install “Dean’s Permalink Migration Plugin

2. After activating, follow this instruction:

  • goto admin panel->options->PermalinksMigration. Set the old permanlink structure of your site. [/index.php/%category%/%postname%/ or /index.php/%category%/]
  • goto admin panel->options->Permalinks. Change the new permalink structure to what you want. (personally I recommend /%category%/%postname%/, yap! no more index.php). PATHINFO to Mod_Rewrite Permalink structure.
  • Done, and problem solve.

Also by using this plugins which is work perfectly for WP 2.5 . By now, you can you change your permalinks structures without losing the traffic you’re already getting. This plugin will generates a “301 Redirect” when user or spider visit your site through old permalinks, and redirect them to the new permalinks of the same post. Search engines will update their indexes quickly and you won’t lose your PageRank. You will continue to receive traffic as though nothing had changed. This works for search engines, bookmarks, and links from other sites.

Do not fear the WordPress 2.5 , upgrade NOW!
