Have you’ve been in a concert recently, you’ve probably noticed how the camera flash all over the place. But we know that the usual camera flash will only limited to 3metres away. Not that any of those low light pictures end up looking decent. Well, Planet82 a korean firm, aim to change that, with an image sensor that’s capable of taking clear photos in dim light without a flash. Unlike CCD or CMOS sensor that you find in most cameras, Planet82’s Single- Carrier Modulation Photo Detector (SMPD) sensor can react to much lower light levels. A black and white sensor for cars and security cameras had been relaesed last year and the full color model debut in CES 2008

Planet82 is demonstrating its new Single Carrier Modulation Photo Detector (SMPD) for the first time in the U.S. The company says the sensor is 1000 times more sensitive to light than traditional photo sensors—it can take picture in near total darkness.
Planet82 says the sensor can capture images when light level is less than 1 lux (or up to 0.1 lux). One lux is the same brightness from one candle one meter away in a dark room. Human eyes can barely distinguish images at less than 1 lux.
